Definition Peak week is the final week of physique preparation before a stage show or a photo shoot, where the coach manipulates training, nutrition, water, and sodium to present the client at their leanest and fullest. It is bodybuilding-specific, partly evidence-based and partly craft, and it sits hard against the scope-of-practice line.

Why it matters for online coaching

Physique coaches deliver this week remotely, with a daily check-in standing in for the gym-floor eye. The stakes change with the event. A photo shoot is low-risk; a bad day is a reshoot. A stage show is higher, because water and sodium manipulation can move a client into medically risky territory that a coach cannot see through a screen.

The remote format also compresses the feedback loop. Where an in-person coach can read the client in real time, the online coach reads yesterday's photo and this morning's weight. That delay is workable. It is not benign.

What is actually manipulated

Training volume and intensity fall through the week so the client arrives fresh rather than depleted. Carbohydrates load in the final days to fill out the muscle. Water and sodium shift, and the last 24 hours are timed to the appearance the client steps on stage or in front of the camera with.

Each lever has a tradeoff and a failure mode. Cut water too early and the client flattens. Load carbs without the training drop and they spill into subcutaneous water. Push sodium too low and cramping follows.

The honest scope line

Peak week can push a client into dehydration and electrolyte shifts that are medically risky. The coach programmes the look. The client's doctor owns the safety. Say this plainly to the client, and say it in writing.

The scope framing we use follows the NSCA and CSCS position on what a strength and conditioning professional is and is not qualified to do. For the nutrition side specifically, the nutrition coaching tool a coach uses does not grant a nutrition licence, and a platform does not change that.

How it shows up in coaching software

Daily check-ins, photos, weight, and macros carry the week. The tool holds the data and the coach reads it, often daily, sometimes twice. A missed check-in on the Thursday of peak week is a different signal to a missed check-in in week three of accumulation.

The mechanics of that loop are covered in how online coaching client check-ins work. Peak week is where that loop gets shortest and the stakes highest.

Where this is drawn from

Much of peak-week practice is craft passed down through bodybuilding coaching rather than peer-reviewed evidence. Treat the published material as partial and the rest as informed anecdote from coaches who have run hundreds of peaks. A balanced popular reference on the nutrition side is Precision Nutrition, which is careful about scope.

The honest-scope framing here is ours. We are a software company, not a medical authority, and we will not pretend the line does not exist.
